De overgang van de berm naar het omliggende land noemen we de schouder. De schouder kan kruidachtig of houtig begroeid zijn. Breed of smal. Of zelfs helemaal ontbreken. Als het landgebruik bijvoorbeeld doorgaat tot op het punt waarop de berm begint te hellen, zien we dat de bovenliggende grond afspoelt in de berm.

La route est constituée de deux voies de 3.5 m chacune (bombement normal en alignement droit = 0.02). De chaque côté de la route il y a 3 m d'accotement (pente = 0.04), un épaulement de 1 m (arrondi de talus), le talus a une pente de 2:1 (2 m horizontal et 1 m vertical), largeur de fossé (si nécessaire) = 0.6 m, flanc de coteau (pente = 1:6) et berge 1.5 m de terrain naturel.
