advocate ممثل، ممثل مصالح Explanation: IRB stands for "Institutional Review Board." Every large medical institution where medical research takes place has such a board. The board typically consists of highly experienced physicians who themselves have done a lot of research. Their job is to review proposals for research experiments by physicians who work at the institutions. The board reviews the proposals to make sure that the proposed research experiments meet all legal and ethical standards as well as institutional guidelines. The process of review is very complex, and that complexity is reflected in the composition of the IRB office itself. To make sure that the review process takes into consideration the rights and interests of the human subjects who will undergo the experiments (often called "trials"), the IRB office has an advocate whose job is to scrutinize each proposal to make sure that the rights and interest of human subjects (who are usually patients at the hospital, many of whom might have terminal conditions) are respected and protected. This person is called Human Subjects Protection Advocate. He or she is one person, but, of course, he has an office with assistants. This person typically has a combination of medical and legal background. I worked at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, from 1991 to 2002, and I was a member of the Medical Ethics Committee for 4 years, so I had direct experience with the IRB. An advocate in this sense is called ممثل or ممثل مصالح.
