هي عدوى بفيروس كورونا coronavirus تُسبِّبُ أعراضًا شديدةً شبيهةً بأعراض العدوى بالأنفلونزا
يُعَدُّ الفيروسُ المُسبِّبُ لمُتلازمة الشرق الأوسط التنفُّسية (MERS)، والذي هو من أنواع فيروس كورونا coronavirus، شبيهًا بالفيروس الذى يُسبِّبُ المتلازمة التنفسية الحادة الشديدة severe acute respiratory syndrome (السَّارس- SARS انظر المتلازمةُ التنفُّسية الحادَّة الشَّديدة (السارس SARS)). تمَّ اكتشاف فيروس مُتلازمة الشرق الأوسط التنفُّسية MERS أوَّلَ مرة في الأردن والمملكة العربية السعودية في عام 2012 م. واعتبارًا من أيَّار (مايو) 2014، كان توجد 658 حالة مؤكدة لإصاباتٍ بمُتلازمة الشرق الأوسط التنفُّسية MERS و 202 حالة وفاة. وقد حدثت معظمها في المملكة العربية السعودية، حيث استمرَّ ظهور حالات جديدة. كما حدثت حالاتٌ في فرنسا وألمانيا وإيطاليا وتونس والمملكة المتحدة عند أشخاصٍ كانوا يسافرون أو يعملون في الشرق الأوسط. واعتبارًا من أيَّار (مايو) 2014، تم تأكيد حدوث ثلاث حالات في الولايات المتحدة. وقد شارك شخصان من الذين عادوا حديثًا من الخليج العربي في نقلها، لكنَّ الشخص الثالث أُصيبَ بالعدوى في الولايات المتحدة بعد مخالطته لأحدهما.
