يرجع تعبير الكريستال Crystal إلى الكلمة اليونانية kριοξ التي تعني البرودة coldness، أو إلى الكلمة اليونانية kριουξ التي تعني الجليد. وقد اعتقد بعضهم أن كريستال الكوارتز quartz (أكسيد السيليسيوم) كان من الماء الذي أضيف إليه مجهول جعله يتجمد من دون تبريد.
