مُصطلَح عامّي محبَّب لدى عشاق أفلام الغموض والتشويق Mystery Film، أي الأفلام التي تبدأ بجريمة ما، ومع تتابع الأحداث ينغمس المشاهدون في التخمين محاولين الوصول إلى شخصية الجاني الحقيقي قبل أن يتوصل إليها المحقِّق. من الأفلام الشهيرة التي يضرب بها مؤرخو السينما المثل كثيرًا عند الحديث عن هذا الصنف من الأفلام، فيلم جريمة في قطار الشرق السريع Murder on the Orient Express الذي أخرجه سيدني لوميت Sidney Lumet عام 1974.
