And they said, “The God of the Hebrews hath met with us. Let us go, we pray thee, three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice unto the Lord our God, lest He fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.”


It is translated in Kitab El Hayat version as follows:

ثُمَّ قَالا: «إِنَّ إِلَهَ الْعِبْرَانِيِّينَ قَدِ الْتَقَانَا، فَدَعْنَا نَذْهَبُ مَسِيرَةَ ثَلاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ فِي الصَّحْرَاءِ لِنُقَدِّمَ ذَبَائِحَ لِلرَّبِّ إِلَهِنَا لِئَلّا يُعَاقِبَنَا بِوَبَأٍ أَوْ سَيْفٍ».

هذا مثال عن تفسير التوراة من العربية للنحوي اليهودي إسحاق بن برون (القرن الثاني عشر الميلادي)، وما بين [] من عندي للتوضيح:

"אבח [= أ ب ح = الجذر: ب و ح ].אבחת חרב (سفر حزقيال، 21:20). هذه اللفظة لا نظير لها في النص [= التوراة، أي نادرة]، وترجمها الحكيم أبو الوليد [مروان بن جناح] رحمه الله "بلمعان السيف وبريقه" بحسب المعنى، وأشار يهوذا بن بلعم إلى أن معناها "خوف السيف" دون دليل. وهي عندي مجانسة للعربي وترجمتها "استباحة السيف"، والاستباحة الانتهاب والاستئصال، قال عنترة:

حتى استباحوا آل عوف عنوة، بالمشرفي والوشيج الذبل.

فجعل [كتاب التوراة] الاستباحة بالسيف والرمح وجاز أن ينسب الفعل نفسه إلى السيف فيقال "استباحه السيف" كما يقال "ضربه السيف وطعنه". وقد جاء عندنا مثل ذلك ואכלה חרבו שבעה (سفر إرميا، 10:46) فنسب الفعلين إلى السيف. ومما يؤيد هذه الترجمة ويعضدها قوله על כל שעריהם נתת יאבחת חרב (سفر حزقيال، 21:20) أي "جعلت على أبوابهم سيفًا يستبيحهم ويستأصلهم"، وأنه ذكر البريق بلفظة ברק التي حقيقته [كذا]، ثم ذكر في آخر الآية لفظة טבח الذي هو الفعل المختص بالسيف ويؤدي إلى الاستباحة والاستئصال اللذين إياهما يريد [كتاب التوراة]، ولا معنى لظهور لمعان السيف على أبوابهم [كما قال ابن جناح] فيمكن أن [يكون] ذلك لهم وعليهم، والنص لا يقتضي إلا أحد القسمين [= الوجهين]. فإذا لم نجد لهذه اللفظة اشتقاقا [في العبرية] وألفينا لها هذه المجانسة [في العربية] وهي لائقة بالمعنى وسائغة فيه، فأخلق بحمل الترجمة عليها ونسب اللفظ إليها. وقد نحا هذا المنحى وإن لم يكن إياه المترجم [في "الترجوم"] في قوله [بالآرامية] קטולי חרבא. وأما רבנו האיי فجعله مثل אבעת بإبدال العين".
