Architecture for the performing arts emerged first. As early as about 600 BCE, the Greeks were building theatres with semicircles of banked seating facing a space for the actors, a design later elaborated in Hellenistic and Roman examples to include a raised stage and architectural backdrop in a graveled courtyard surrounded by colonnades for audience seating. Shakespearian plays were peformed in facilities such as 1599 Globe Theatre in London, with a portico-sheltered stage at one side and several stories of seating forming a many-sided polygon around an unroofed "pit" for the less affluent audience.
