Degree to which a paper surface resists penetration of ink. An inked image printed on paper with a high degree of ink holdout will dry by oxidation rather than by absorption. Coated papers tend to exhibit a high degree of ink holdout.

Най-простото обяснение е, че в зависимост от покритието, хартията всмуква мастилото по различен начин – при хромовите хартии степента на попиване на мастилото в хартията е много по-малка, отколкото при вестникарската. Следователно нарастването на растеровата точка при печат ще бъде много по-голямо при вестникарската, отколкото при хромовата хартия.
