a narrow and fairly sharply defined transition zone between two or more communities (Allaby 1998); eg the different plankton communities that occur on opposite sides of fronts.

Definition:
Видовият състав на биоценозите зависи и от разнородността на средата за обитание. Влиянието на разнообразието в условията върху броя на видовете се изразява особено ясно чрез т.нар. граничен ефект в екотоните. Границите на биоценозите рядко са резки. По такъв начин между съседните екосистеми се създава по-тясна или по- широка преходна зона със свой температурен режим, налягяне, влажност и осветяване. В тазе зона се преплитат типичните условия на съседните екосистеми. Тази зона се нарича екотон. Във всеки екотон има видове от двете гранични биоценози. Във всеки екотон има специфични за него видове, следователно екотонът е с много по- богата биоценоза.
