El problema és evitar l'ambiguïtat. Allò que he escrit podria significar "the people living in the countries they colonised" o "the people living in the countries that colonised". Potser penseu que és prou clar. Com que no sóc català, doncs no sé. Què penseu?

Trobo que la teva traducció està molt ben trobada. Per evitar aquest possible malentès (què no ho és tant per sentit comú) podries posar, "països que havien estat colonitzats", potser és més feixuc i més carregòs però així ja no hi ha lloc a dubtes.
