Mr Bogle says that the view of a financial sponsor banker as a maitre d’, merely guiding clients to industry and product specialists is largely inaccurate. He argues that these bankers have to be generalists “with an edge”. Because sponsors are themselves so financially savvy, bankers need to be very good at what they do. “It’s not enough to be a pass-through banker. If you can’t go toe-to-toe with a sponsor, you won’t win the business. You need to be able to originate and help execute transactions and to be a real adviser.”
