English term or phrase: sit immobilized
Context:

The world’s 12,000 surviving cheetahs sit immobilized as a threatened species.

What does "sit immobilized" mean? Does it mean this animal does not move to other places or does it mean the number doesn't change? Thanks!

Explanation:
sit ... 。。

Having read what jyuan put in the explanation, I now have a second thought on this. I admit I was careless in regard to the verbal form and jyuan is correct in her/his argument. I would change my translation into

Explanation:
The world’s 12,000 surviving cheetahs sit immobilized
