English term or phrase: they should be assured that they do still control their own feelings
This abuse of power should not be accepted. In a gentle way they should be made aware that they do not have the power they think they have. For example, they cannot refuse to have a relation- ship with one of their parents. They should be expected to be civil and polite to both parents. At the
same time, they should be assured that they do still control their own feelings. They do not have to  love a parent unconditionally until they really feel this love. Concrete examples may help. Remind them that even though Aunt Mary is bossy or Grandma is strict, they must still go on family visits. And they are expected to be polite.

Chinese translation:
Explanation:
就像前句的“be expected to", 或是 "be supposed to" 等等,表示”“应该”但不具有实质上的被动语态。 就像“I'm obliged to... (感激), "I'm committed to...", "I'm devoted to..."

Here's relevant definition of "assure" from Lingoes, which is used in reflexive way:

3 [~ oneself]
I ~d myself of his safety.
I ~d myself that he was safe.
He ~d himself that all the doors and windows were locked.

"He is assured that" 可视为 "He assured himself that...

They should assure themselves that they do still control their own feelings.

Explanation:
原文可以理解为 "they should be assured that they still have a control over their own feelings"。

Explanation:
be assured = to cause to feel sure
