I am completely lost with the following sentence that comes from the description from a patent of a discharge lighting system. The paragraph (very well written by the way, which is unusual for a patent) is discussing the optical interferences of certain systems....and then this "happens":

Phosphor costing creates areas that will settle out the phosphor and create dark spots on the lamp....

I would really appreciate if someone could have a look at this sentence, because I have looked at it for a long time now, and I don't know what is meant here....either the "costing" plays me tricks, or the "settle out" does, but as it stands, I haven't got a clue what is meant, and, worse, how it is related to the rest of the paragraph.

Settle out in dit zinsverband betekent zonder meer "neerslaan", of "uitkristalliseren" of "afzetten" of wat je ook maar verzint om een stof uit een gas/dampvorm op een vast voorwerp terecht te laten komen.

Explanation:
Dat van die typefout klopt want in hetzelfde patent staat de zin ook correct gespeld. To settle out betekent echter neerslaan c.q. bezinken en zou dan dus moeten slaan op het aanbrengen van de coating mbv een suspensie. Hoe dat dan in deze zin past is mij echter ook niet volkomen duidelijk: levert een plaatselijk te dikke fosforlaag donkere plekken op of juist een plaatselijk te dunne laag tgv het mogelijk niet homogeen zijn van de coatingsuspensie...?
