Then it's also possible he was making certain machine parts. "Bankwerker" sounds like an older word that might fit the bill. These days, if we want to keep it general, I think we'd simply call it "gespecialiseerd technicus".

Is was written in mid 20th century, so I don't know whether this will be of any help. Although I always try to be as accurate as possible, I think it is especially important that it is understandable now, so I am probably going to opt for "onderhoudstechnicus". I think this is a general term which will reflect the meaning sufficiently in this context.

You're welcome, Cathalina. Not whose individual birth is key, but the year the certificate was written. As the occupation was called, so was it written. Was it early 20th century? Could he have been an engineer's machinist?

Of course it also depends on whether you need it to be historically accurate, or something that's (still) understandable now?

I can only estimate his year of birth, as it is not about his own birth certificate...

I think it's someone who does technical maintenance (whatever the equipment; can be machines, railroads, ...). Since it is a birth certificate, you know the year of birth. You should try and determine a general term for it matching that era.

Oh, and it really says "engineers machinist", not "engineer machinist"? This sounds to me like it might be part of a larger term, f.i. Corps of Engineers.
