Vaak betreft het lymfocyten maar ook andere typen witte bloedcellen kunnen hierbij betrokken zijn. Macroscopisch is een infiltraat te herkennen aan zwelling en soms roodheid, maar dit kan ook optreden als er alleen oedeem bestaat zonder infiltraat.
