Ahead of us was an old stone bridge about twenty feet wide. Hitler Jugend soldiers were nested in a collection of buildings. They had machine guns and mortars, along with ack-ack guns arranged to fire at ground level right down the dike.

Vóór ons bevond zich een oude stenen brug van ongeveer zes meter breed. Soldaten van de Hitler Jugend hadden zich daar verschanst in een aantal gebouwen. Naast machinegeweren en mortieren, waren ze in het bezit van afweergeschut dat zodanig stond opgesteld dat vanaf de dijk het maaiveld kon worden beschoten.

Heel interessant, ik vermoedde al dat het een onomatopee was en dacht daarbij aan het kaliber. Het betreft een 88 mm afweergeschut, flak of Fliegerabwehrkanone. Ack-ack komt van Acht-Acht.

agree  FionaT: Luchtafweergranaten. Ik heb me altijd laten vertellen dat ack-ack ten tijde van WO I "British telephone code" was voor AA (anti-aircraft).
