Dear Tahmineh,

Are you sure your reasons are enough solid?! I can't understand how نیکدار can mean "someone who restores works of art to its original status" while حفاظت گر cannot! I just asked to give me a sentence example in which نیکدار has been used with this meaning.

BTW, thank to Mr. Edward who corrected your fault; but maybe it's better to select the answers based on whether it's correct, not whether the responder has recognized a mistake!

I selectedنیکدار because Edward noticed the field and even my fault! furthermor, حفاظت گر is not suitable for this text because it is not to maintain the work of arts but to "restore works of art" to original condition...

Thanks for your explanation.

So if you do agree with me about not using "archaic" and "non-ordinary" words, why did u select نیکدار, which in no way conveys the sense of "someone whose job is to clean and repair historical objects or works of art". Let's tell ten people this word and see what they understand from it!!

What's more, If you had read the note added to my explanation, and also the first discussion entry by me, you would have noticed that I was not insisting on the word سنت گرا or محافظه کار (I never suggested the latter), but I emphasized on the word حفاظت گر.

Don't you think حفاظت گر can totally match with the definition "person who restores and maintains antiquities and works of art", especially when this word has been used in the name of an art association?

Dear Ahmad,
First of all please note the text from BBC news: "Conservators were able to safely remove these additions to return the painting to its original state." As Edward suggested, I have to use "conservator" not "conservative".
I definitely agree with you on not using "non-archaic" non-ordinary" words.
Edward noticed the true word (conservator) but others suggested words like سنت گرا، محافظه کار and even مواد نگهدارنده، هنرمند اصالت گرا.
مرمت کار could be a good choice but as I know it is not true for painting. مأمور نگهداری آثار could not be used because it you refer to full text, they do not maintain but somehow “remove additions to paintings”.
Using of Archaic words is weird because nobody understands you! I selected نیکدار because its meaning is very close to the purpose of author.

Thanks for your discussion entry, Mr Edward. Yes, this definition has been provided by Aryanpur dictionary. However, I have encountered with many words suggested by Aryanpur which has been very rarely, or even never used; but I don't think it's a good idea to use words which ordinary, and even high-educated people don't use!

نیکدار--کسی که مسئول مرمت و نگهداری آثار هنری و ابنیه قدیمی است

This is the definition I found in Aryanpour's Translators' Dictionary. It seemed to be a perfect fit. Since this discussion started, I have not found this word anywhere else with this meaning.

I thought maybe it was a new word coined by the Persian Academy, but no. I checked their list of words and this in not there.

I was completely surprised that this was the answer selected.

Hello!

Would you please give me a sentence example of نیکدار which has been used related to this concept?! As we google this word, we see about 300 results, and all of them are family names!

I don't think an ordinary native speaker of Persian would deduce "person who restores and maintains antiquities and works of art" from نیکدار. And why should you use archaic words? I suppose a translator's mission is not to use a language hardly ever used, just because some outstanding authors (and mostly from the far past) has written in this kind of language.

Why not using a word like حفاظت گران while this word has even been used in the name of an association, i.e. انجمن حفاظت گران هنر کهن ایران?

Dear Tahmineh,

I don't know what you exactly meant by "the field to which the word is related"!! I even gave you an example which is fully related to arts. I still suggest حفاظت گران or سنت نگران for this term.
