در گذشته همه عدسي هاي ساخته شده از نوع Spherical (كروي) بودند . نوع ساختار آنها بسيار ساده بود ، اما نمي توانستند تصاوير واضحي را ثبت نمايند ، چرا كه نمي توانستند نورهاي موازي را در يك كانون (نقطه) تشكيل دهند . اين مساله خطای كرويت نام داشت . مهندسين كانن متوجه شدند كه يك لنز آسفريكال ( غير كروي) مي تواند مانع بروز خطاي كرويت شود ، جرا كه ساختار منحني شكل آنها مي تواند پرتوهاي نور را بر روي يك نقطه متمركز نمايد . اما كشف اين تئوري با عملي كردن آن بسيار متفاوت بود.
