English term or phrase: old and worn
Hi,

How do you say ‘old and worn’, for example of very old clothes that are almost falling apart?

According to this Turkish etymological dictionary (under çapaçul), you have a word چپان in this meaning: http://www.nisanyansozluk.com/?k=çapaçul

What’s more, I thought I heard چپانچُل (or چپاچُل) in Persian today (again in the same meaning), but perhaps I'm wrong? Please ignore all this if unhelpful, but an Iranian friend says that چپاچُل does ring a bell.

Best wishes, and many thanks,

Simon

ژنده is a bit literary and formal.

کهنه is neutral and widely used.

پاره پوره is informal.

Explanation:
نخ نما too is good for worn. When it comes to people as in old and worn person we say pir va fartoot!

چَپَر چلاق

Explanation:
I don't think we have any collocation such as چپاچل or چپانچل for worn-out clothes. But maybe what you've heard is چپرچلاق which is used for old and worn people.
I suggest this because of your own hearings. It looks like this.

چپان

Explanation:
This is the Persian word you are searching for, but I think it's an archaic one as, except fot dictionaries, its search almost has no result.

چپ و چوله

Explanation:
Maybe this is what you heard; used for people and not clothes
چپ here means "squint eye" and چوله means "not straight" and maybe "crooked", it gives the connotation of "an ignorant, inexperienced, and somehow an ugly person"!
