English term or phrase: user assignable
Hello,

Can anyone help me translate user assignable in the following sentence?

This allows for pan and tilt control as well user assignable speeds and operation modes with 2 custom toggle switches on the transmitter.

Many thanks

neutral  Tony M: 'assignable' doesn't usually mean 'réglable' — it is usually to do with 'affectation', though it's hard to see how you do that with speeds...

-> If you can set different speeds for different tasks, I guess it may be considered as "affectation"

agree  Daryo: that's what's makes sense here

neutral  GILLES MEUNIER: attribuer, assigner, affecter.

neutral  Tony M: My only concern is this sounds awfully like one of those anglicisms you so hate! All the examples I found on the 'Net (inlcuding your own ref.) were translated from sites originally in EN; I couldn't find a single native-FR example :-(

disagree  Tony M: Agree with Daryo, it has to be 'by' and not 'to'

user-assignable
configurable par l'utilisateur

Explanation:
and before some clever-clogs comes along and says it — yes, I know this really translates 'user-configurable'; however, it does get many, many thousands of Ghits, at least a respectable proportion of them from native FR sites — and to all intents and purposes, probably means the same thing in this particular context: the user can configure the various speeds to various functions; in fact, the very use of 'user-assignable' in the first place is technically odd, and might be inaccurate (wider context?) — 'speeds' are not usually something one 'assigns'.

I suspect here it is probably something like the unit has, say, 'High', 'Medium', and 'Low' speed positions, and the user can assign a specific (pre-defined) speed to each of those 3 positions; that's the only meaning I can attribute to the use of 'assign' here.

Interestingly enough, just out of masochism, I did even check to see if there were any examples of 'affectables par l'utilisateur' out there — and to my surprise there actually are!

Not surprisingly, though, they are all translations from texts originally in EN, and most of them can be blamed on Yamaha!

agree  Daryo: by far the best option, so far

  -> Merci, Daryo !
