English term or phrase: hard and fast gear shifts
Bonjour à tous,
Il est ici question des huiles ATF (Fluides pour boîtes de vitesses automatiques).
"ATF oil are adjusted to three quality classifications. The first one is the FORD F/G classification. The FORD F/G is adjusted for automatic transmission with hard and fast gear shifts."

- Which characterisitics are required to qualify an ATF transmission as a good one ? Let the manufacturers and the car owners answer by themselves : 1. "The engine is paired with a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission"/"Le moteur est couplé à une transmission automatique six vitesses d'une grande souplesse." /https://www.chrysler.ca/fr/town_&_country/performance.html 2. "Four-speed automatic transmission delivers smooth, seamless, consistent shifting, power and performance. "/ "La transmission automatique quatre vitesses procure un changement souple, uniforme et tout en douceur des rapports, tout ..." / https://www.chrysler.ca/fr/sebring_convertible/performance.h... 3. "Electric control gear shifting transmission is light and flexible to operate, effectively reducing labour intensity of driver" / "Changement de vitesse à contrôle électrique léger et flexible, réduit efficacement l'intensité de travail du conducteur." / http://www.dstgmachine.com/3-vibratory-roller-1b.html Let us write down the features required or claimed regarding the ATF gearbox operation qualities: "grande souplesse; changement souple, uniforme et tout en douceur; léger et flexible"
Here are some references that are llustrating the difference between "hard shifting", considered as an ATF failure and "hard-and-fast shifting" , considered as an ATF 's ideal operational condition and performance : 1. "Hard shifting in an automatic vehicle is typically the result of a faulty or failing transmission." / https://www.reference.com/vehicles /automatic-car-shift-hard-d35acb71419b3949 2. "Recently the transmission has been shifting hard and hesitating during acceleration. ... the auto parts store to see if that would give me a cheap and fast fix." / http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=show... 3. " Problem: Transmission shifts hard from 1st to 2nd" / http://www.mercedesproblems.com.ar/problemas.html Therefore, we come to the conclusion that "hard shifting" is considered as a problem and an ATF failure. From a logic point of, view, would a manufacturer like Ford set up gearbox oil standards requiring a failing ATF operation ?
1. "This means pushing down hard and fast on the centre of the chest at a rate of 100 compressions per minute. " / http://www.heartandstroke.com/site/c.ikIQLcMWJtE/b.4677141/k... 2. "The Lacrosse is brisk, not laboured, and the smooth-shifting transmission proved a pleasure to see and reach from " / http://www.companyowl.com/s/Buick/9?s=buick hard shifting au... : This Buick owner's feedback comment illustrates the required quality of an automatic gearbox : the smooth shifting. Hence, we shouldn't confound the meaning of the term "hard shifting" which refers to a rough, harsh shifting, which is an abnormal ATF working characteristic and the meaning of a "hard-and-fast" shifting which refers to an accurate and homogenous thus fluid operation. The "hard-and-fast" term is a location, exactly because it should be understood as a whole, not separately interpreted expression. That's why the really right form is the one with hyphens. 3. "Buy Lucas Oil 10441 Automatic Transmission Fluid Conditioner - 20 oz. ... Origin, USA .... I added this product and now shifts are incredibly fast and hard." / https://w
Dobar dan Daryo, The inflexible connotation of the "hard and fast" location, when applied in a mechanics context means that every gear shift is firmly engaged but not definitive as the early literal synonym that you have found could lead us to misinterprete. If the automatic gearbox operation is "inflexible", "definite", "rigid", "immutable", then how could the shifting be possible ? ! The gearbox could simply not work ! As I have pointed it out in my explanations, the "hard and fast" location came from the sailing area and qualified the firmly and in a steadily pace executed manoeuvres of a ship's crew to handle the ropes, the sails and the other components of the ship. That's exactly the way an automatic gearbox should work : with every new gear firmly engaged but in a steady and homogenous pace, i.e. in a fluid pace. In French, this pace corresponds to the expression "dans un rythme homogène et fluide, sans à coup, le contraire de rythme composé de passages secs des rapports."
OTOH I've never heard "hard and fast" used in a way that would suggest some kind of fluidity or flexibility, on the contrary "solidly anchored" would be more like it!
hard and fast phrase of hard 1. (of a rule or a distinction made) fixed and definitive. "there are no hard and fast rules about that"
hard-and-fast [hahrd-n-fast, -fahst] Spell Syllables Synonyms Examples Word Origin See more synonyms on Thesaurus.com adjective 1. strongly binding; not to be set aside or violated:
Dobbar dan Daryo. I understand your dificulty to dig the connotation of the "hard and fast" location in an ATF transmission oil features description context. That's why I have seek for its etymology. I found out that this expression has emerged from the sailing area. When a ship was firmly atached with her ropes, she was attached "hard and fast". Which meant that the ropes had been unfolded and handled in a dynamic -yet not harsh-but smooth and accurate way. It's this connotation that the automotive area professionals adopted for the description of manual gearboxes first, then of automatic tr ones. A variant of his location has been adopted much later in the airplane area: Fasten your seatbelts! It is also an operation which requires a firmly locking of the seatbelt but with accurate and fluid movements as well. That's how the meaning of this location has finally evolved in this direction: accurate, dynamic and smooth.
