Encore faudrait-il que le mot "appâtage" existe (bien qu'il convienne tout à fait au "poisson" que nous sommes quand on y succombe! ;-).

Eliza ne fait que répéter les définitions et explications déjà données en élargissant le champ, mais qui n'est pas celui de la question: l'entrée porte spécifiquement sur "Advertising one product but pressuring (or only allowing) customers to purchase another (generally inferior or higher-markup) item." Donc, "bait-and-switch advertising" - ce qu'on appelle en général (ici, faut-il le préciser) de la publicité à prix d'appel.

Le grand dictionnaire propose plusieurs autres solutions:

Sur la base de la définition très claire d'Eliza, j'opte pour l'appâtage (sans oublier l'accent circonflexe) car, s'agissant de faire venir le client, on est plus près de l'idée d'appât que de celle de leurre.

Bait-and-switch has no necessary connotation of pricing tricks. It can be done through pricing tricks, but that's not the only way to pull a bait-and-switch.

The concept is that you advertise X (the "bait"), and then when people come to buy it, you try to sell them Y instead (with Y being inferior to and/or more expensive than X). In other words you persuade people to come to you by offering X, and then when they get there, you "switch" X for Y.

For instance: you advertise some fantastic apartment; people come to visit it; when they arrive you say, "That one JUST got rented, but would you like to see this other one?" -- and the other apartment is not as nice, or is more expensive, or has less appealing lease terms, etc.

If your advertisement was a lie, if that fantastic apartment was never available and you were just using it to get people to come see the inferior one, that's "bait-and-switch."

I'm using "advertise" in the broad sense here -- the phrase is used in all types of contexts, not just literal sales contexts.

En fait, c'est une "pratique anticoncurrentielle. En annonçant à prix d'occasion des produits qui ne sont pas offerts en quantités raisonnables, des détaillants réussissent à attirer par un moyen déloyal des consommateurs dans leur magasin, et à vous ravir ainsi votre clientèle."

On parle ainsi de "vente à prix d'appel" ou de "publicité d'appât", de "publicité sur article d'appel" ou de "publicité d'appel" : technique publicitaire qui consiste à annoncer à très bas prix un article de piètre qualité pour attirer le client et lui faire acheter au prix courant un article du même genre mais de meilleure qualité."
