Hors connexion semble bénéficier d'un large usage.

neutral  Tony M: Unless it is being used as a direct calque of the EN term, then I don't think this term is applicable in this very specific context / Again, there's nothing really about that sort of 'line' about this here :-(

disagree  Tony M: Non-linear editing is one thing, but it doesn't specifically mean 'offline'; it's a different concept, even though of course some offline editing is indeed non-linear; but so is most online too! / Oh, and I used to teach this stuff at University level

-> I used to learn that stuff and I passed my BTS audiovisuel...

neutral  Germaine: Pas faux, mais "non-linéaire" tend vers "the old way of doing thing", et + encore quand vs dites Online edit is the old way". Nowadays, le montage on-line suit toujours le montage off-line; it's not a thing of the past.

offline edit
montage sur copie / montage préliminaire

Explanation:
Both of these terms are suggested by GDT

Personally, I'd favour the former, as being more accurately descriptive, and it also has at least one fairly authoritative-looking reference.

It's important to understand that off/online refer to different processes, or indeed stages, in the editing process; this is not at all the same as referring to the technical means by which those processes are achieved.

For example, "in the olden days" we'd work with a cutting copy of a film, and that would literally speaking be an 'offline edit' — even though that term didn't begin to get used until video came in.

It's important to understand that 'non-linear editing' refers to the technical means by which the editing is performed; this term is largely redundant these days, since virtually all video editing, whether off- or online, is almost inevitably performed using non-linear technology.

-> Right, hence why the context makes all the difference here ;-)

agree  Germaine: en fait, même au Québec, l'expression "montage off-line" est largement utilisée, notamment par un réalisateur client qui est pourtant très pointilleux sur l'usage du français...
