English term or phrase: prop
I had a feeling that ***name of the film*** might be a good example of obsession in filmmaking, but it never really came together until I spoke to XXX. XXX is making a really interesting documentary about the making of ***name of the film***, and he was just an extraordinary resource. From that, we developed the idea of looking at the sound design of the film in conjunction with the iconic prop of the ear.

depending on the context but 'icon' can just be the image of an ear that appears in certain circumstances/ moments : l'icône d'une oreille comme accessoire

agree  Tony M: I can only assume that 'Name of the Film' involves a prop of some kind of an ear, which has become emblematic of the film; perhaps Maryline could enlighten us?
