Naturally, I can't speak for the way the term is understood in FR; but in EN, it means more than just a "not very clever girl" -- it carries the implication of 'attractive but dumb' -- more boobs than brains (I hasten to add that I do not in any way subscribe to these sexist and judgemental views!)

So one might have a simple, plain country girl who might be 'not very bright', but wouldn't count as a bimbo

Isn't there some non-personality at the moment called Nabila or something, who seems by all accounts to be the archetypal bimbo?

I thought one uses bimbo in English for some not very clever girl, though, and I wonder if the use made in French of the word does not lack that understanding?

I think we need to take care here, as IMHO 'boobs' can have 2 quite different registers, depending on who is saying it about whom.

For example, if a lusty young man says "I like big boobs!", then I think that corresponds exactly to 'nichons': "J'aime les gros nichons"

On the other hand, if a girl were to say "I wish my boobs were bigger", then I don't think the register is the same -- and I can't really imagine a girl talking about her 'nichons' in that way; I suspect she'd more like call them 'nenettes', for example.

I think all the words in EN like boobs, tits, titties, jugs, etc. (you can see I'm no expert here!) can have different, and more or less pejorative senses according to the context in which they are found.
