-> J'ai peur de faire un contresens, ici... car je comprends que la dame aime exprimer des opinions divergentes qui bousculent la perception habituelle que l'on a d'un film ou du cinéma en général...
Mais pour moi il y a un hiatus entre "dissenting" et "formal ideas"... d'où le gros doute quant au sens de cette expression!

Je ne connais pas vraiment le domaine, donc ma réponse sera probablement incomplète, mais j'espère qu'elle sera utile.

Il me semble que l'apparente "contradiction" entre dissenting et formal est volontaire et que les deux adjectifs se rapportent bien auxdites idées.
L'idée est développée par la phrase qui suit. La personne, par l'approche innovante de techniques traditionnelles, propose une rupture ambiguë et inattendue qui perturbe la perception classique du film.
