Explanation:
That's the literal meaning, but there may well be a FR industry jargon term; however, the US term 'foley' is quite often used in FR anyway.

It refers to the very specialiszed art of post-synching footsteps and other similar man-made noises; coconut shells for horses hooves, etc. The point being that unlike most other 'momentary' sound FX, these are not usually edited in individually, but (used to) rely on a skilled artist to reproduce the footsteps etc. in sync with what they see on the screen. 'Beryl the Boot' was one of the most renowned foley artists in and around Londond and the BBC back in the '80s.
