English term or phrase: output
Bonjour,

"The designer’s role is in support of the narrative, characters and themes of the film; as such, an assessment of their output is necessarily bound to the whole film."

Merci beaucoup d'avance.

œuvre / production
Explanation:

agree  Tony M: Though here, it refers I think to 'any specifc piece of their work', and as such, I wonder if 'travail', for example, might not be better here? As 'one piece of their entire 'œuvre''. No confusion: 'their' is a common gender-neutral singular pronoun.

-> Thanks. I did once believe this differentiation was made through the gender of "œuvre", but this does not seem to have any significance in modern French.

agree  Catherine Demaison-Doherty: I agree with the above explanation, but the fault lies with unclear English, since "designer" is singular, but the text also refers to "their" ouput. Possibly trying to be gender neutral.
