I don't think we can do much about 'mince', since it is 'bœuf haché' whichever way you look at it; of course, it is often called 'ground beef' in AE, which comes abck to 2 words, the same as FR! -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs (2013-03-17 20:39:24 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- In the UK, and I suspect also in the US, 'mince' on its own is traditionally and conventionally understood as being minced beef; if it is any other meat, then that would always be specified — but in the UK at least, minced other meat used until recently to be fairly rare; minced pork would usually be called 'sausagemeat'. Also, beef is the meat traditionally used for certain dishes, such as chilli con carne, tacos, bolognaise sauce, lasagnes, etc. — again, this is usually taken for granted in the absence of a qualifier, and any departure from it would usually be specifically mentioned. |
