English term or phrase: Reduction
Bonjour à tous,

je traduis un document sur l'histoire du thé mais je n'arrive pas à comprendre ce que vient faire le terme "reduction" dans la phrase suivante. Toute aide sera précieuse ! Merci d'avance !

"The supply of high quality teas could not keep up with the growing demand of 18th and 19th century tea drinkers as afternoon tea became popular amongst the wealthy. As a result the reduction of low quality tea was dramatically increased."

French translation:production
Explanation:
Effectivement, le mot "réduction" n'a pas sa place dans la logique de cette phrase.
Il semblerait qu'il y ait une faute de frappe et qu'il s'agisse probablement de "production".

agree  Simon Mac: Yes, I think it must be a typo for "production" in the English. I've looked at the source text on the web and it really doesn't make sense any other way.

Explanation:
reduction is actually a cooking term ( akin to infusion in this case).
The example sentence is in keeping with a decrease in supply of high quality teas.
