Commonwealth in the US, and I've lived 36 of my 38 years in N America!!! Just goes to show you how geocentric we can be at times (hey, I have an excuse, Canada is a lot of geography to learn when you're in school :-)))))))
Personally, I lived for 16 years in the Commonwealth of Virginia and still havent learned the difference between a Commonwealth and a State ;))

it also doesn't sound ridiculous to my Canadian ears, in either language. Perhaps within the States it's different... but in Canada, Qubec means the city, au Qubec means the province, and in English it's the Province of Qubec and Qubec City. Mind you, we don't say `We are travelling through the province of Ontario', we just say Ontario, I imagine because there is no Ontario City ;-)
sorry but specifying that one out of the three is a state sounds ridiculous when all 3 are states - would be like saying Belgique, Allemagne et le pays de France

I guess it just sounds choppy to me. What if we said: dans le Mass., l'Oklahoma et l'tat de NY? (it is OK state)
if it's Oklahoma city, then your guess was perfect ;-)
