Tout a fait. Une invention doit être réalisable par un homme de l'art sur seule lecture du brevet, mais cela n'implique pas qu'un prototype a été effectivement construit; quand c'est le cas l'invention devient un object réel, une chose en soi ("RE" en latin, racine de réel, réaliser, etc.). Comme le souligne Bruce, l'invention peut aussi être un processus industriel dont la réalité est démontrée par l'essai pratique. Il est donc plus adapté de traduire par "réalisation", plus général que "fabrication d'un prototype. C'est pourquoi j'ai secondé Ahmed.

An invention starts with an idea or recognition of an important fact. While this may establish a research program and guide decisions, it isn't an invention yet because there are still many things that need to be tried, worked out or resolved. Questions need to be answered.

The idea could be a dead-end.

At some point, it is clear that the issues have been resolved. A sample has been made. There is a full set of mechanical drawings. Trials in animals show a therapeutic effect. There is a working model. These are all signs that there has been an actual reduction to practice of the invention.

By default, filing a patent application is taken as showing reduction to practice.

Things like signed research notebooks and double envelope deposits may be used to document an earlier dates of actual reduction to practice and subsequent diligent work to prepare an application.

Since France and the EPO use a first to file approach, there may not be an exact equivalent in French. Mise en pratique does sound good to me.
