English term or phrase: Back seated valve
Bonjour,

disagree  Tony M: The valve is being described as being in its 'back-seated' position, which is nothing to do with either 'dispositif' or 'étanchéité'. Your ref. is substantive 'back seating', not adjective 'back seated' as here — totally different!

neutral  Tony M: Though in fact as a two-way valve, it can be both 'back seated' and 'front seated' (as you have correctly pointed out), which will slightly change the translation needed. Perhaps 'en appui sur son siège arrière'?

agree  Tony M: That seems to me logical in terms of the correct context here; though I'm not personally familiar with the actual term... / I don't think so: by def., if closed, it will be on its seat; what is key here is which of the 2 seats...

back seated valve
vanne à siège inversé

Explanation:

Valves whose disc is between the seat and the stem and where the stem moves in a direction into the valve to shut it are normally-seated or front seated. Valves whose seat is between the disc and the stem and where the stem moves in a direction out of the valve to shut it are reverse-seated or back seated. These terms don't apply to valves with no stem or valves using rotors.

Donc:
back seated = fermée inversée
back seated & cracked (open) = fermée inversée puis légèrement ouvert
front seated = fermée normalement

Example sentence(s):

disagree  Tony M: Wrong context! We already know this is a 2-way valve with both a front and back seat. Because that poster had correctly identified the type of valve and explained this very point.

-> Confusing. Why didn't you comment similarly "robinet (de service) à siège arrière" then?
