English term or phrase: caretaker
Is it correct to translate "caretaker" pour gardien?

The context is a marketing study related to television watching, and they say "the children and their parents (or other caretakers)" watching TV together.

neutral  cc in nyc: I can't be SURE from the short text, but I don't think this is the sense of "caretaker" in this context

-> I saw it as someone formally responsible for someone else's children, which is "tuteur" in French, and therefore not a babysitter, but maybe it is being used less formally here.

Notes to answerer
Asker: So, is it...their parents (or other caretakers) = leurs parents (ou d'autres gardiens) -- or -- leurs parents (ou d'autres gardiens d'enfant) ?

Asker: Merci.

surveillant

Explanation:
just another idea- You also could translate by describing the caretakers: ceux qui prennent soin de/font attention à

agree  Jennifer Levey: Fair enough, especially considering the likely intention to include casual 'caretakers' such as babysitters.
