échantillon [de/du bord de la/du] bobine ou rouleau
Explanation:
The International Paper company doesn't list any edge samples but they do talk about reel samples. Whether you are talking about paper, fabric or film, that would translate as "bobine." Though I did find it translated as "rouleau," I still favor "bobine." I couldn't find any examples of paper samples in French that spoke about the edge so, without knowing more, I would be tempted to follow the International Paper Company's lead and just say "échantillon [de] bobine."

Reel - The roll on which the finished paper product is wound at the end of the paper machine.
Reel sample - Samples taken from a reel of paper for testing.

Here is a Canadian example. But honestly, I think trying to say edge sample in this context is trying to Americanize French. It does not appear typical, to me, for the French to speak of the edge of the paper. Instead, they seem more likely to talk about the paper itself, as well as its "surface" and its "aspect." I've included some general references for you. Note that there isn't a listing for edge sample at the Neenah Paper glossary just as there wasn't one listed at the International Paper glossary. Perhaps this is not a standard term?

agree  Johannes Gleim: pas très clair. // The question is unclear, because of missing context.

-> Thank you! :-) Is it their request or my answer that isn't clear? Personally, I don't know why it isn't just simply called what it is and what the gerex.com reference called it: a sample of paper (or a paper sample :-)
