English term or phrase: nip to flap force
As used herein, nip force refers to the force pushing the two nip rolls together applied in a normal direction (i.e., perpendicular to the nip roll axis and directly in line with the two rolls), as shown in Figure 2. As used herein, flap force refers to the force applied normal to the flapper at a distance of 1.25 inches from the centerline of the flapper pivot, as shown in Figure 2.

The configuration of the crimp may be important for the processability of the final baie in subséquent Processing steps, e.g., a latéral and/or substantially latéral crimp configuration may provide better cohésion of filaments than a vertical and/or substantially vertical crimp configuration unless further steps are taken to enhance cohésion. To achieve a latéral crimp, at least one of three Processing parameters may be manipulated, e.g., the water content of the tow band prior to crimping, the thickness of the tow band during crimping, and the nip to flap force ratio during crimping.

Suitable stuffer box crimpers may hâve smooth crimper nip rolls, threaded or grooved crimper nip rolls, textured crimper nip rolls, upper flaps, lower flaps, or any combination thereof.
