I think here thereon refers to both grip portions. And in this context, the word "adhérer" or "saisir" would be a good fit for "to grip".

disagree  Tony M: I think you'll find it is more like 'either' than 'both'; and I'm not sure about 'adhérer', though 'saisir' does sound more suitable, as 'grip' here is pretty close to 'grasp'

  -> yeah i thought about "adhérer" for the fact that it means you can have a good grasp but you're right it does not directly convey the meaning, I wanted to correct after posted it for "aggriper" that can be nice too I think.
