neutral  Tony M: Not always in the plural, Alain! It's perfectly possible to have just one 'mains lead', for example... / Ah, now the fact they often come in pairs doesn't mean that linguistically it is always in the plural — that's a different issue altogether

  -> Tony, as far as I know, a "mains lead" is a power cable, and a battery always has more than one lead, but if you can prove I'm wrong, I'm interested to learn.
