Macro lenses 08:29 Sep 9, 2015
As the general text seems to be referring to macro lenses, I think there is another possibility that so far no-one seems to have mentioned.
I don't think it's really about a range of focal lengths — that doesn't quite seem to be what they are referring to here, and in any case, modern lenses already offer pretty good focal length coverage. Nor, I think, is it anything to do specifically with focusing distance: almost all lenses go from ∞ (of course!) down to sometimes quite close distances. What I think they are referring to here is bridging the gap (that does still exist!) between the minimum focusing distance in 'normal' and the maximum focusing distance in 'macro' — this can be quite irksome at times, where you want to get in just that bit closer in 'normal', and yet not quite close enough to be 'macro'. |
