The incoupling is a resonance phenomenon, that occurs at a precise angle of incidence which depends on the refractive index of the medium covering the surface of the waveguide.

Then (see reference 2):

Si une couche fine de métal, riche en électrons libres (ex une couche d’or) est rajoutée sous le verre et est traversée par cette onde évanescente, les électrons du métal entrent en résonance. Ce phénomène est appelé résonance plasmonique de surface.

Si le faisceau réfléchi est analysé avec une barrette de diodes, une chute d'intensité à un angle défini est mise en évidence. Cet angle d'intensité minimum se nomme l'angle de résonance et il a la propriété de varier en fonction de l’indice de réfraction du milieu.
