Tech/Engineering - Physics / Barometer
English term or phrase: HG
On that barometer, you can select different pressure units:
MMHG > mmHg, ok
HPA > hPa, ok
and "HG", that would be just "mercure", and then it's not any unit, or what? A mistake/tipo?
Thank you!

hg
Hg

Explanation:
Atmospheric pressure was traditionally measured by the height of a Mercury column, the unit being either mm (millimeter) or Inch. One mmHg is also 1 Torr (named after Torricelli). hPa is Hectopascal - Pascal is the modern pressure unit named after - who else - Blaise Pascal. 1 Pascal is one Newton per square meter - a very small unit so one measures in hPA, kPa (kilopascal), MPa - Megapascal). Very small pressures are also measured in height of Water column (normal atmospheric pressure is approx. 10 meters of water column)

agree  Daniel Marquis: Oui, tout simplement. L'explication en anglais est suffisamment claire.

agree  Tony M: I think it's safe to assume that the use of Hg alone simply refers back to earlier references to 'mmHg', by contrast with '(h)Pa'

agree  Jean-Claude Aciman: Tout à fait d'accord. L'utilisation de Hg (mercure) se rapporte aux unités (mmHg) précédemment citées.
