hg Hg Explanation: Atmospheric pressure was traditionally measured by the height of a Mercury column, the unit being either mm (millimeter) or Inch. One mmHg is also 1 Torr (named after Torricelli). hPa is Hectopascal - Pascal is the modern pressure unit named after - who else - Blaise Pascal. 1 Pascal is one Newton per square meter - a very small unit so one measures in hPA, kPa (kilopascal), MPa - Megapascal). Very small pressures are also measured in height of Water column (normal atmospheric pressure is approx. 10 meters of water column) |
