word invented by Lewis Carroll. 12:23 Jan 24, 2018
“Galumph” is a nonsense word invented by Lewis Carroll in his poem “The Jabberwock”.
The relevant verse in English is:
One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back.
I have a translation of the poem into French (translator unkown), in which this verse is:
Un deux, un deux, par le milieu, Le glaive vorpal fait pat-a-pan! La bête defaite, avec sa tète, Il rentre gallomphant.
So the translator uses “gallompher” as a verb in French. The associated noun would presumably be “gallomphe”.
My idea of the meaning was that he was riding triumphantly but heavy-footed and clumsily.
