Asker: Da man bei KFZ von Fahrgestellnummern spricht, ist es doch naheliegend, dass ein Flugzeug vielleicht auch eine Fahrgestell- oder nach einem sonstigen Flugzeugteil bezeichnete Nummer hat, oder nicht?

Reference information:
The (manufacturer's) serial number (MSN) and the construction number (CN, C/N) appear to be the same. In both cases, the number refers to a permanent identification of the aircraft, irrespective of its registration at any given time. It can be used to trace the history of the aircraft. In this respect, it is thus comparable to the "Fahrgestellnummer" in a car. See the following interesting links for more information.

MSN5000 bildet den Abschluss der Auslieferungen von sieben A320-Flugzeugen an MEA. Die Fluggesellschaft betreibt mit vier A330-200, sechs A321 und einschließlich der MSN5000 jetzt sieben A320-Flugzeugen eine der modernsten Flotten in der Region.

The construction number (cn), also known as manufacturer's serial number (msn), is the permanent identity of an aircraft assigned by the manufacturer. The cn can be found on the cn plate somewhere in or on the aircraft. Except for some total rebuilds the cn is normally not changed during the lifetime of an aircraft, in contrast with the registration. For establishing the history of a particular aircraft through its multiple registrations it is of the utmost importance to know the cn.

neutral  Schtroumpf: Bei Airbus heißt das so, das stimmt. Aber bei einer Sportmaschine würde ich S/N so stehen lassen.

  -> What I was actually suggesting was that "(manufacturer's) serial number" and "construction number" are essentially synonymous and both equate to "Seriennummer" in German. So I think we are actually in agreement! :-)
