Teresa Reinhardt, I disagree that it should be Studienjahr, which is why I chose Abschnitt. Though courses could be taken one per year, they must not and students are only bound by having fulfilled the prerequisites and not being in a certain year. This is also why I said fortgeschrittenen Abschnitt and did not choose 3. oder 4. Abschnitt. I agree with philipp kieffer; The US system is much different than the German one. Yes, I thought about "Studienjahr" also but then decided to write "Studienabschnitt" because of the (theoretically) in your sentence. There are probably students who don´t get to their 300 level classes in the third year of their studies and "drittes Studienjahr" could therefore be a bit misleading.

But admittedly Studienabschnitt is not very clear either. I guess with university studies being organized differently in Europe you would have to anyway include some kind of explanation for German students to make it really clear what is meant.

I wouldn't call this a "Studienabschnitt"; in the US, 300 and 400 level classes are scheduled to be taken (theoretically) in the third and fourth year (of undergraduate studies); but not before the 100 and 200 level ones. Hence, Studienjahr would be more appropriate.

12 oder mehr der angerechneten Semesterwochenstunden für den 3. und 4. Studienabschnitt müssen and der Northern Illinois University absolviert werden.
