It is possible that it should read 'throw it in', short for 'throwing in the hand towel' as you mention yourself. Maybe 'the youff' have shorten it even further, as they quite often do.

Was wird "geworfen"? Da stehe ich auch auf dem Schlauch. Wenn "throw it" auch "das Handtuch werfen" kann, könnte es sich darauf beziehen, dass er besser bei der Armee gekündigt hätte - das ist ein aktuelles Thema zwischen Briefautor und Adressat, weil der Adressat tatsächlich aus der Armee ausgeschieden ist. Andererseits sollte vermutlich auch die Kamera weggeworfen werden, weil sie einem Zivilisten gehörte, den die beiden versehentlich gekillt hatten. Die Kamera hätte zu einem belastenden Indiz für Autor und Adressat werden können, und drinnen war ein Film mit Fotos von dem Zwischenfall.

Is not so much about reasoning, as pondering: nachsinnen, nachgrübeln, usw, though whether there is a suitable German phrase for this, I'll have to leave to the native speakers. 'Genug nachgegrübelt' sounds pretty unpoetic to me!
