Hello everybody

I am busy translating a test reprot on new amunition for big-game hunting. It actually is more marketing than technical but here is a little detail I am not quite sure about:

"The difference of 150 gr. XXX in 308/30-06 and 155 gr. in the 300 Win Mag is most likely a result of the expansion hole – the 30-calibre cartridges with smaller muzzle velocity have the largest hole to ensure expansion."

What exactly is meant by expansion hole?

I found something on expansion bullets which have a little hole on the top wiht liquid that makes the bullet expand on impact. This seems to fit the context exept that in the ST the "hole" refers to the cartridge and not the bullet.

The onl "hole" for cartridges I found was the "flash hole" (ZÜndkanal). I am not sure though whether that has anything to to with expansion.

I'd be greatful for any input.

It is, as you mentioned, a hole in the end of the projectile (bullet).

The expression cartridge is misleading, but is also used for the bullet and cartridge together - as in German with the word Patrone (the spent cartridge is then the Patronenhülse).

This describes it quite well and features illustrations of the projectile in cross-section and before and after hitting a target:

Der Expansionsraum ist mittelgroß und im vorderen Drittel mit 3 Sollbruchstellen vorgespalten und mit einem Rundkopf Aluminium Starter gefüllt. Dies garantiert eine schnelle Energieabgabe auch bei schwachem Wild und mittleren Auftreffgeschwindigkeiten. Der übrige Expansionsraum ist so massiv gehalten, dass selbst bei Magnum Ladungen fast das volle Restgewicht erhalten bleibt.
