Hintergrund: Der Hauptdarsteller wird gerade von seiner Geliebten (telefonisch) verlassen, hat aber auch noch andere Probleme.

"This was not the time to think about that [die schönen Zeiten mit der Geliebten]. I shouldn't stay and sit. I had to undertake something. Move about - otherwise something would ***take the better of me***, something that seemed far from healthy..."

So ganz ist mir der eingesternte Satzteil nicht klar. Der weitere Kontext gibt keinen Aufschluss darüber, was gemeint sein könnte.

Der Hauptdarsteller deutet damit an, dass er nicht länger rumsitzen kann, dass er jetzt unbedingt etwas tun muss, ansonsten würde er sich noch zu etwas hinreißen lassen, das gar nicht gut für ihn ist.
(So in etwa könnte man es auch übersetzen).
