English term or phrase: multiproxy
The complex interactions between different domains and processes at the Earth’s surface and their links to processes of the Earth’s interior as well as the atmosphere demand a strong interdisciplinary research strategy addressing a broad range of time and spatial scales. Department 5 combines methodological expertise and topical competence to investigate processes, mechanisms and dynamics of change at the Earth’s surface. Much of this change leaves its fingerprints in various geoarchives which are the targets of our investigations. We focus on four research fields including (1) dynamic processes at the Earth’s surface like erosion and analyses of potential trigger mechanisms, (2) long multiproxy time series of climate and environmental change reconstructed from geoarchives, (3) geomicrobiological studies to understand microbial controls on biogeochemical cycles in the deep biosphere and the subsurface-surface interface and to identify microbial proxies of past changes, and, (4) hydrological processes as an essential driver of Earth surface processes (extreme events, weathering, erosion and matter transport).
We combine the expertise in observation and analyses of current Earth surface processes (erosion, sedimentation, microbiological activity, water storage changes and matter fluxes) with multiproxy data reconstructions from geoarchives, which enables us to evaluate short-term variability in the context of processes working on longer time scales that are not detectable by actual observations alone.
