The usual translations federnd, elastisch, nachgiebig etc. just don't fit.

The exact sentence: As a people, we hade been patient, *resilient* and hopeful for a long time before we stepped tentatively, though proudly, into the 20th century. Despite the pain and deprivation we suffered we trusted that there would be light at the end of the tunnel.....
